Melamine dinnerware – Sometimes finding the perfect gift or the perfect gravy boat to match Grandmother Butter dish is just impossible. Fortunately, you can customize your own tableware to match the decor of your newly-wed friend’s dining room, or to express your own style to your table. There are studios that will charge you to paint your own pieces and take them home, but you can complete this craft at home with just a few supplies and a furnace.
Sketch a design to replicate your melamine dinnerware so that you know what you want it to look like before you start painting. You can use ceramic, glass, or “green” for this project; do not use plastic bowls. Clean all pieces with soap and water and dry thoroughly. Use a natural bristle brush, once your design on your dinnerware. For small intricate details, use a small brush; if you paint the entire piece or a large area of it all one color, use a large brush.
Sweep brush along the piece in the same direction. The plates will look cleaner with only vertical lines, while the cups and bowls look prettier with horizontal rules. Wipe excess paint off of the brush every time you put more color on it to avoid goopy, uneven spots. Paint multiple coats to achieve deeper colors. Let the paint dry between applying layers of paint. Put your melamine dinnerware in oven according to the instructions on the paint bottle. For many colors you will use a low temperature and bake in a short time.
